Résumé of E. Coen Beuvery

E. Coen Beuvery (1943) studied biochemistry at the State University of Groningen (The Netherlands). In 1969, he started his active career at the Dutch Institute of Public Health (RIV) doing vaccine research in Dr Hans Cohen’s group. His attention was mostly directed towards meningococcal polysaccharide vaccines. The development of these vaccines was boosted by the efforts of Emil Gotschlich and Malcolm Artenstein (Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, USA). The results of their efforts appeared in a series of five papers in the Journal of Experimental Medicine in 1969. Polysaccharide vaccines can be -due to their simple and defined structures- classified as the first generation of well-defined biologicals. Completely new was the absence of an animal model to test their efficacy! He presented his thesis at the University of Amsterdam in 1980. His studies concerned, among other things, the influence of conjugation of polysaccharides on carrier proteins in order to modify their immunologic behaviour to make the polysaccharides attractive as vaccine. In 1985, a step in the direction of the production of vaccines had been made. Items such as process understanding (relationship process/product), validation of processes and automation received his special interest.

He left the NVI in 2004 to stimulate the implementation of the relevant FDA guidance documents in Biopharmaceutical Companies. After he left NVI, he started his own company, called PAT Consultancy. He is a strong advocate of the network approach for the realization of the necessary knowledge for a subsequent implementation. At the moment, he is coordinating a project supported by Senter (an Agency of the Dutch Ministry of Economical Affairs) and directed towards the development of typical PAT-Tools for the real time product release of a bacterial suspension to be used as a vaccine. Two companies, an Institute and a University Group are participating in this project.

In the past, he was active in the ‘WHO Steering Committee on Trans Disease Vaccinology’, in ‘European Society for Animal Cell Culture Technology’ (ESACT; organization of the 13th Meeting in 1994) and in the China Vaccine Project (CVP; 1989-1996). CVP was partially financed by the World Bank. During the past years, he has given a number of presentations in IIR and organized meetings on various topics (data management, process validation, process understanding, stability and purity of biopharmaceuticals, comparability)

He is the author of more than 70 scientific papers, published in peer-reviewed journals, about various issues in bio pharmacy. All relevant information about the papers can be obtained by using http://www.scholar.google.com and typing- in ‘Beuvery, E.C’.
